Ramie is finished more delicately and gracefully when it is woven with patience and elaboration for long hours. Hansan Ramie Weaving, which is done manually one by one, was registered as the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the UNESCO in recognition of its value in 2011. Let us introduce Hansan Ramie, the traditional fabric that has been made at the tip of Hansan women's fingers for over thousand years.
 

Ramie, Traditional Natural Fabric Inherited From Thousand Years Ago
Rustle, rustle. Ramie with a rough and cool touch as if the wind comes in and out has been a much appreciated fabric which cools down in the sweltering heat of midsummer. Ramie is of many different kinds from ramie cloth with fine texture to roughly woven wispy cloth, depending on how thin and finely woven it is.
 
Specifically, Hansan Ramie, made in Hansan-myeon, Seocheon-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, has been thought to be the epitome of Ramie as it is even more superb in quality, compared toother regions. It was offered to the king as a highquality fabric from old times, becauseit is very fine, highly absorbent, and even glossy. It also has a subtle and elegant charm as well as good ventilation.
 
The legend has come down in connection with Ramie in Hansan. An old man in the era of the Three States went to Mt. Geonji in Hansan to dig out medicinal plants, and he saw an unfamiliar plant. He then peeled the skin and found a soft and glutinous substance, out of which he spun thread and wove hemp cloth. This was the beginning of Hansan Ramie.

The process of the Ramie plant being turned over into a delicate fabric is the work of perseverance and patience. The first product of the process is ramie cloth of fine texture, which is made with gathered ramie plants being soaked and dried repeatedly,and then being torn by hands to be made into strands. The last process is the Ramie weaving, in which strands are created one by one with great elaboration.
 
You will run into a very ironical truth as you follow through the birth process of Ramie. The cool Ramie, which cools down the sweltering heat, can only be woven in the steamer-like heat. As the Ramie thread is easily cut off when dry, one must weave it in a humid atmosphere with doors closed so as not to have ventilation however warm it is. In old days, people dug the ground in the corner of the kitchen and made a mud hut to weave Ramie in it. The coolness born out of the heat, that is Ramie.
 

The 25th Hansan Ramie Fabric Cultural Festival (June 21-24) & HansanMosi Fabric Hall
In HansanMosi Fabric Hall in Hansan-myeon, Seocheon-gun, the 25th Hansan Ramie Fabric Cultural Festival is held with the theme of the Ramie and Traditional Cultural Festival from June 21 to 24, 2014.

In this cultural festival to be held in the midst of many Korean and foreign tourists' attention, various training programs, such as ramie clothes fashion show, ramie weaving demonstration, Hansan ramie embroidery trial, Hansan Ramie patchwork trial, and Hansan Ramie folding trial will be performed.
 
HansanMosi Fabric Hall is well suited for the Ramie experience even if it is not the time of Hansan Ramie Fabric Cultural Festival. This place consists of a teaching hall, demonstration workshop, folk hall, Ramie-tying workshop, traditional agricultural implement hall, and Mosigak. Specificallyin the traditional workshop, one can look at the Ramie production process, in which artisans designated while working on intangible cultural asset.
